Lye started his educational journey in art by studying for a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at the West Glamorgan Institute where he gained the William and Elizabeth Jefferies Award. Following on from this he gained a HND in Graphic Information Design at the University of Westminster. Lye continued to expand his experience by studying Photography, Illistration and Life Drawing at the Swansea institute. It was during this period that he started to develop his series of System Paintings.

Just after the “System” paintings were made, Lye found himself, by random events and good fortune studying Architectural Stained Glass at Swansea Institute where he gained a BA Hons in 2002. What started as a curiosity to explore the potential of a different medium, soon became a passion for the quality and substance of this, the most beautiful and fragile of materials.
In the system paintings, Lye was attempting to challenge the perception of ‘machine made or man made?’ Spending weeks creating the isometric drawings and painting the triangles between, to imitate what a computer could produce in moments.

The new work continues the theme in an ongoing series ‘products’ autonomous and limited edition works that mirror mass production in shape, colour, texture and form through far from the disposable and replaceable world of plastics that they seek to mimic, these objects are delicate unique and handmade… only one of each will ever exist.
